ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOPS in UBUD

During two consecutive summers (’16,’17) I lead architectural workshops at Gakko Camp in Bali. Invented from scratch for an audience of 30 teenagers, the workshops had to be experiential and unique.

For instance, in 2016, I created a workshop called “dreamshelter”. The main intent was to introduce the concept of vernacular architecture around three key concepts: Community – Autonomy and Sustainability. The workshop consisted of two parts: first, each kohai made a small model of their ideal shelter with “as found” materials like bamboo skewers, leaves and earth, second, we built together a giant structure with bamboos and rubber bands with hammocks and fabric shades. We named the structure “dreamshelter”: soon it became the refuge for our fictional autonomous community, the physical symbol of our shared ethos, but ultimately a safe space to share our stories.

BAMBU INDAH '17

In 2017, Bali Gakko camp was hosted in Ubud at a magical place called Bambu Indah. In my spare time, I started sketching the the beautiful spaces made of natural bamboo. I particularly focused my investigation on construction details and spatial dividers. At Bambu Indah, all the walls and enclosures are porous. Dichotomies such ad private/public or inside/outside are completely challenged. Outdoor showers, daybeds in common spaces, natural pools, bamboo pods are all elements participating in the redefination of our idea of privacy.
